This skillet was specially created by Artist Lourdes Villagómez in honor of Day of the Dead traditions across Mexico and the world. The monarch butterflies in the design represent the souls of friends and family members who have returned home for this special earthly celebration, a powerful reminder of transformation and rebirth.
The monarch butterfly design is even more striking in person, and the skillet is already nicely seasoned so my first batch of cornbread didn't stick at all. It's heavy and solid, and the artistry makes it a centerpiece I actually leave out on the stove.
I was nervous a decorative skillet wouldn't actually cook well, but the seasoned surface is flawless and the butterfly engraving is deep and clean. It's heavy in the best way, and I've already used it for cornbread twice since it arrived.
The monarch details are stunning, but what really sold me is how evenly this seasoned surface cooks—my eggs slide right off. It's definitely heavy, but that weight feels reassuring for a pan this size.
